From the Catholic News Service comes the story of a Hindu couple who converted to Catholicism in only a few months' time after the wife was led there by a series of dreams of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There are a couple of interesting notes in this story.
First is the very rare grace of actual dreams of the Blessed Virgin. Few of us are blessed to receive dreams or vision of God or the saints.
Second is the "spiritual disturbances" the wife reported. The Church tells us that Adversary does at times interfere in a bold and blatant way with our spiritual lives, especially at critical moments like this one. All things considered, the skeptic would be quite justified in suspecting that she actually suffered from psychological problems, rather than enjoying graces and enduring spiritual buffeting from the Adversary. But to one who has the faith to be open to the possibility of a real spiritual experience, the evidence weighs on the side of genuineness.
Third is the parish priest's wisdom in not forcing the family to do the entire RCIA process by the book. RCIA is a disciplinary practice and just begs for an exception in a case like this, in particular because of the disturbances the wife was suffering.
And fourth is the fact that the couple was married the same day they received the other sacraments. They were already married, of course, but because neither she nor her husband had been baptized, the marriage was not sacramental in the eyes of the Church. Once they became Christians, to continue living as a married couple, it was essential that they be married sacramentally. The pomp and circumstance of their wedding ceremony was a personal choice.
What do you think of this fascinating story?
